Herniated Disc In detail
A herniated disc is a condition that occurs when the outer part of your spine (the outermost layer of your vertebra) bulges out and presses on other areas, such as nearby nerves or muscles. This can cause pain in the back, leg, and foot.
A herniated disc is usually caused by a tear in one of your discs. Your discs are flexible, rubbery cushions that protect the spinal cord and nerve roots from sudden jolts or trauma. Each disc has a tough outer ring called the annulus, which surrounds a central jelly-like soft spot called the nucleus pulposus. The nucleus pulposus contains natural lubricating material that helps cushion each vertebra against shocks during movements such as twisting, bending, or turning.
An injury to this cushioning material can begin to leak out between the layers of your spinal bones, causing pressure on nerves and other structures within your spine. This inturn may cause weakness or numbness in some parts of your body, depending on where these nerves are located within your back or legs.
How Chiropractors Diagnose Herniated Disc
A chiropractor will first ask about your symptoms, including how long you’ve been experiencing pain. You will have to describe the severity of your pain and clearly explain where you feel the pain most. Sometimes, the chiropractor may review your medical history before continuing with the diagnosis process.
The chiropractor will then perform a detailed examination of your spinal joints and vertebrae to determine whether you have a herniated disc or other condition that might explain your symptoms. During this evaluation, the chiropractor may recommend additional tests to diagnose the source of your pain further.
Chiropractic Care for Herniated Disc
After diagnosing and establishing the causes of a herniated disc, the chiropractor will determine the best course of action. Ideally, various chiropractic techniques have been used to treat herniated discs and are still being used today. Here are some notable ones.
Flexion-distraction
The most commonly used chiropractic technique to address herniated disc symptoms is flexion-distraction. Your chiropractor will have you lie on a specialized table, which stretches your spine.
This will, in turn, isolate the affected part of the spine, allowing easy manipulation. This technique isolates the injured disc by stretching its ligaments and surrounding muscles. Once it has been separated, the chiropractor can gently pump it back to alignment.
Pelvic blocking practices
The chiropractor can also use various pelvic blocking practices to address herniated disc symptoms. In essence, they can use cushioned wedges and exercises. Whichever the case, the goal is to push those bones apart and stretch out muscles at their sides. This helps relieve pressure on nerves hence alleviating pain.
